Alpine Huts

Hikers can stop for refreshments at homely, snug mountain inns: the alpine huts where walkers are welcome. The cuisine is mostly simple, though delicious and rejuvenating. There’s no menu, just what the alpine farmer and his wife are able to provide. In the Alto Adige Region, for example, they offer you meat broth, sweet scrambled egg pancakes, “Canederli”, i.e dumplings or a simple cold patter of “Speck”, fresh mountain cheese and crusty bread. By offering you a hot meal as well as overnight stays, these stop over huts make it possible to walk for as many days as you want without carrying large quantities of supplies. The locations of the huts are marked on good hiking maps and it should be noted that most are open only from July to September.
