Information offices are available at stations thoughout Italy, with details regarding National and European destinations.
The Italian rail system is operated by TRENITALIA.
The rail network is well developed and widespread, especially between major urban centres and tourist areas. The fastest trains operate on the networks between the major cities while the regional trains usually stop at all stations. You will find that rail travel in Italy is cheap and efficient.
NO SMOKING POLICY ON ALL TRAINS IN ITALY
As from 11 December 2004 it is forbidden to smoke on all Italian trains.
Train Classification:
- ES: (also known as Eurostar) – very fast trains stopping only at major cities.1st and 2nd class – supplement payable – booking compulsory – ES 450, ETR 460/480 and ES 500 to be used on very high speed tracks.
- INTERCITY: Fast trains stopping at major cities – 1st and 2nd class – supplement payable – booking recommended.
- INTER-REGIONALI: Trains stopping at many cities – 1st and 2nd class.
- REGIONALI: Local trains stopping virtually at every city within the same region. Normally 2nd class only.
- SLEEPER trains operate between major Italian cities and to foreign countries.
RAIL PASSES & TICKETS: Can be purchased from your local travel agent in Australia and New Zealand.
IMPORTANT NOTICE! Please be aware that once you have purchased a ticket, you must validate it before boarding the train at the special yellow machines that can be found along the platforms. Failure to do so will result in a fine.
